Dished Psaltery ~ Schoenhut's 22 Note Dished Psaltery is made from one solid piece of hardwood with no glued seams. A fully chromatic musical instrument, it features an arrangement of white keys on one side and black keys on the other. With each string tuned to a specific pitch, a pleasing violin-like sound is easy to attain without having to fret any strings. A popular instrument during the Middle Ages, the Psaltery was depicted in various forms in manuscripts and carvings.
Brought to England during the Crusades, the Psaltery is thought to be based on a North African instrument, the Qanun. By the 18th century, it had developed into other instruments ... the Hammered Dulcimer (struck with hammers) and the Harpsichord (fitted with a keyboard mechanism). The soothing melodious tones of this lovely instrument are pleasing to the ear, for both the musician and a captivated audience. MADE IN THE USA.
