This brand new flute takes its name from its standard length of one foot (shaku) and eight (hachi) parts of a foot (called sun), approximately 54cm. There are other lengths of the instrument as well, all with the general name of shakuhachi. Hold the flute under your bottom lip and blow over the crescent cut at the top edge. Much easier to play than a regular flute. These flutes are within 5-8 cents of pitch; rarely are they off by 10 cents. A cent is a unit of measuring intervals in music. Each half step (semitone) is made up of 100 cents.
