The esraj is held upright in your lap and played with a bow like a small bass fiddle. With a neck like that of a sitar, the Dilrubra, with its skin covered body, is considerably easier to play than the sarangi, but can produce similar sounds. The difference between a dilruba and an esraj, to which it bears a striking resemblance, is that the dilruba supports additional sympathetic strings that are tuned with the pegs at the center of the peghead. The esraj is seen primarily in Bengal and neighboring Bangladesh, while the dilruba predominates in northern states of India.
